Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies found in women. This sort of cancer develops from the breast cells, working its way from the inside, out. Once the area is affected, it can spread to other parts of the body. It is not only the most common, but also the most invasive cancer in all females worldwide. This sort of cancer is held responsible for almost twenty percent of all cancer deaths in the world.
Breast cancer rates, surprisingly, are much higher in developed countries in comparison to third world, developing countries. This does make sense, however, because breast cancer is more common in older women and the life expectancy in developing countries is lower.
As the cause of cancer is unknown, it does become more difficult to say why it starts developing in the the body. The most common reasons, of course, are genetics and aging.
There are many treatments and therapies to help reduce the cancer formation, such as radiation, chemotherapy and, potentially, surgery.
At The Center, we are dedicated to supporting our Northern Michigan breast cancer patients with the most advanced, expert breast reconstruction techniques and care. Our surgeons are proud to participate in the multi-disciplinary breast initiative at Munson Medical Center and we routinely collaborate with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and general surgeons to formulate a plan of attack with regard to this disease. We are here for you.
